Curtis Amy & Paul Bryant • Meetin' Here

Curtis Amy
Biography by Ron Wynn
A good soul-jazz and hard bop tenor and soprano saxophonist, Curtis Amy enjoyed a busy period in the '60s, then dropped out of sight. He studied music education at Kentucky State College and earned his bachelor's degree in the early '50s. After teaching school a while in Tennessee and working in Midwestern clubs, Amy moved to Los Angeles in the mid-'50s. He recorded with Dizzy Gillespie in 1955, then worked in the early '60s with Onzy Matthews and Roy Ayers, and performed and recorded with Gerald Wilson in 1965 and 1966. Amy led bands that featured Bobby Hutcherson, Victor Feldman, Jimmy Owens, Kenny Barron, and Ayers in the '60s, and recorded for Pacific Jazz and Verve.

Curtis Amy & Dupree Bolton • Katanga!

Review by Scott Yanow
Tenor saxophonist Curtis Amy recorded six albums for Pacific Jazz during 1960-63. This CD reissue from 1998 has all of the music from his sixth set (Katanga) and half of the performances (three selections) from his fourth outing, Way Down. Amy had a fine hard bop-oriented style with a soulful sound. The Katanga date matched him with the legendary (and barely documented) trumpeter Dupree Bolton, guitarist Ray Crawford (heard in top form), pianist Jack Wilson, bassist Victor Gaskin and drummer Doug Sides on four originals, plus “A Shade of Brown” and “You Don’t Know What Love Is.” The other session finds Amy with a completely different group consisting of trumpeter Marcus Belgrave (one of his few recordings from the era), valve trombonist Roy Brewster, vibraphonist Roy Ayers (at the beginning of his career), bassist George Morrow and drummer Tony Bazley, performing three of Amy’s tunes. Obscure but rewarding music that was overshadowed during the era and was previously long out of print.

///////

Curtis Amy • Mosaic Select

Review by Thom Jurek
Of all the volumes in the Mosaic Select series -- as of this writing there are eight -- none is more welcome or unexpected than this set by the late saxophonist, composer, and arranger, Curtis Amy. What these three CDs contain are Amy's entire six-album output for the Pacific Jazz label which includes his masterpiece, Katanga!. Amy's star continued to shine in different contexts after he left the label, as a tough tenor with Gerald Wilson and Ray Charles, as a soloist on the Doors' Soft Parade and L.A. Woman albums, and of course, as an arranger and bandleader in R&B singer Merry Clayton's group (the pair were married).
But it is the material here which cements Amy's place in the jazz pantheon. Amy hailed from Houston, and is very much a part of the rich and varied Texas tenor tradition. He migrated to Los Angeles to work, and fronted numerous soul-jazz bands there before recording these six albums for Pacific Jazz. The titles include the Blues Message and Meetin' Here (co-led with organist Paul Bryant), Groovin' Blue (co-led with drummer Frank Butler), and Way Down, Tippin' on Through, and Katanga! (the latter three as a solo leader), all of them issued between 1960 and 1963. The first three albums in this set offer the view of Amy as a bluesed-out soul wailer in a scene dominated by the latter heyday of cool jazzers and West Coast hard boppers. The players on these three recordings offered a glimpse into the deep R&B roots of the Sunset Strip jazz club scene: along with Bryant and Butler, trombonist Roy Brewster, drummer Jimmy Miller, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, and bassists Jimmy Bond and Clarence Jones played on these sessions, all of them stalwarts on that steaming but criminally undocumented scene. The fourth album in the set, Way Down, features some new faces, most notably Marcus Belgrave before his stint with Charles Mingus, and vibist Roy Ayers before he went solo. Other players on the date include bassist George Morrow, and pianist Victor Feldman. Tippin' on Through is a Live at the Lighthouse date, and Amy pulled out all the stops with Larance Marable, Brewster, Bobby Whitlock, and pianist John Houston. On all of these sessions, Amy is deeply rooted in the rhythm and blues and soul traditions of the Texas tenors. His combo work is restricted rhythmically perhaps, but it is harmonically brilliant in the way it stretches these forms to the breaking point at the front line, and the pieces on the live set dovetail and turn back on themselves -- dig the large modal frames Houston lays down under Ayers' vibes: Ayers then extrapolates them for the horns to jump off from. Texturally too, the way solos are layered and dovetail and turn back on themselves dynamically is quite remarkable, in that many of the New York soul-jazz dates didn't get to this place until 1966 or so. Finally, Amy was already deeply under the sway of Coltrane on Tippin' on Through: his own solos take the modal approach, and wind around one or two phrases and blow them from the inside out, exploding into torrents of sound without moving away from the blues.
Katanga! is a case in point all by itself. It remains a jazz classic for its wondrously extrapolated and striated harmonics, its knotty sense of interval, and Amy's melodic sophistication, which was deeply saturated with Latin and African scalar considerations. This set also features the trumpet playing of the little-known and under-recorded Dupree Bolton, the elegant funk of guitarist Ray Crawford, and features Amy on soprano, an instrument that he mastered and became an original voice on, despite the fact that he had played it for such a brief time previous to this session. Here, despite the elongated compositional structures, the blues are never out of the limelight entirely. The title track, written by Dupree Bolton, and "Lonely Woman" (Amy's version, not Ornette Coleman's) are the highlights here, but there isn't a weak millisecond on this slab. In all, this collection is its own revelation -- not only of Amy's overlooked artistry, but of the city of L.A. teeming with fresh sounds and approaches before the steamroller of rock and roll overshadowed it.

Gerald Wilson • Feelin' Kinda Blues

Review
by Scott Yanow
This live record features the 1960s Gerald Wilson Orchestra in prime form. Surprisingly Wilson did not contribute any of the ten songs (which are highlighted by "When I'm Feeling Kinda Blue," "Freddie Freeloader," "Watermelon Man," and "Well, Son Shuffle") but his arrangements make all of the pieces sound fresh and swinging. The main soloists are tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards (who is featured on seven of the songs), trumpeters Bobby Bryant and Freddie Hill, guitarist Dennis Budimir, and altoist Anthony Ortega.

Curtis Amy Sextet • Peace for Love

Review by Scott Yanow
Saxophonist Curtis Amy gained some recognition for his Pacific Jazz recordings of 1960-1963, but after 1966 he worked primarily as a session and studio musician and was completely forgotten in the jazz world. In 1994, when he was 67, he was persuaded to go back in the studio and make a long-overdue jazz record for Fresh Sound. Joined by trumpeter Steve Huffsteter, trombonist Bob McChesney, Donn Wyatt or Frank Strazzeri on piano, bassist John B. Williams, and drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, Amy performs three originals that he co-wrote with Wyatt, and a song apiece by Huffsteter, Strazzeri, and Rob Mullins. The music is more advanced than his work of 30 years earlier, and, unfortunately, most of the new songs are not all that memorable. On the bright side, Amy (heard on tenor and soprano) still sounded in excellent form (his chops had not declined), and it was a welcome occasion having him back in a jazz context again.

Les McCann • Les McCann Ltd. In New York

Leslie Coleman "Les" McCann (born September 23, 1935, in Lexington, Kentucky) is an American soul jazz pianist and vocalist whose biggest successes came as a crossover artist into R&B and soul.

An early musical success for McCann was his winning of a Navy talent contest for singing; this led to an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. McCann's main career began in the early 1960s when he recorded as a pianist with his trio for Pacific Jazz Records.

In 1969, Atlantic Records released Swiss Movement, a recording of McCann with frequent collaborator, saxophonist Eddie Harris, and guest trumpeter Benny Bailey at that year's Montreux Jazz Festival. The album contained the song "Compared to What", and both the album and the single were huge Billboard pop chart successes. "Compared to What" featured political criticism of the Vietnam War. The song was not written by McCann; fellow Atlantic composer/singer Eugene McDaniels wrote it years earlier. "Compared to What" was initially recorded and released as a ballad by Les McCann in 1967 on his Les McCann Play The Hits, issued on the Limelight label. Roberta Flack's version appeared as the opening track on her debut recording, First Take (1969).

After the success of Swiss Movement, McCann – primarily a piano player – began to emphasize his rough-hewn vocals more. He became an innovator in the soul jazz style, merging jazz with funk, soul and world rhythms; much of his early 1970s music prefigures the Stevie Wonder albums of that decade. He was among the first jazz musicians to include electric piano, clavinet, and synthesizer in his music.

In 1971, he and Harris were part of a group of soul, R&B, and rock performers – including Wilson Pickett, the Staple Singers, Santana and Ike & Tina Turner – who flew to Accra, Ghana for a historic 14-hour concert before more than 100,000 Ghanaians. The March 6 concert was recorded for the documentary film Soul To Soul. In 2004 the movie was released on DVD with an accompanying soundtrack album.

Les McCann discovered Roberta Flack and arranged an audition which resulted in a recording contract for her with Atlantic Records.

A mild stroke in the mid-1990s sidelined McCann for a while, but in 2002 he released a new album, Pump it Up. McCann has also exhibited as a painter and photographer.

"Compared to What" presentaba críticas políticas a la guerra de Vietnam.

Curtis Amy • Groovin' Blue + Way Down + Tippin' on Through

Between 1960 and 1963 Texas tenor Curtis Amy (1927-2002) made six superb albums for Dick Bocks Pacific Jazz label, three of which, Groovin Blue, Way Down, and Tippin on Through, are included here. They were part of Bocks recognition of the emergence on the West Coast scene of a more groove-based, harder swinging approach than the cooler, considered style that preceded it. He chose well. Years of semi-obscurity in L.A. dance bands and organ combos had made Amy a thoroughly seasoned, assertive and inventive player in the mould of fellow tenor, Harold Land; these Pacific albums established him as a major exponent of the new music revitalizing West Coast jazz.

For these recordings, which also showcased his considerable capacity as a writer and his sensitive way with ballads, Amy was surrounded by some of the finest young lions on the scene, creative soloists who combined soul and imagination with the ability to swing hard. Adding a timeless lustre to this consistently engaging music is the sterling work of trumpeters Carmell Jones and Marcus Belgrave, vibists Bobby Hutcherson and Roy Ayers, pianists Frank Strazzeri, Vic Feldman and John Houston, valve trombonist Roy Brewster and outstanding rhythm section men like Frank Butler, Lawrence Marable, Jimmy Bond and George Morrow.

Paul Bryant • The Blues Message / Burnin’

In the late Fifties organ had earned a place with modern jazz fans, and Paul Bryant [1933-2010] was but one of the latest organists to find an audience. He had a hard-hitting, two-fisted style that exploited the registers to the limit. In this set Bryant was blessed with the illustrious company of tenorist Curtis Amy, guitarist Jim Hall, and budding trombonist Roy Brewster.

On the rhythm section, bassist Clarence S. Jones—alternating with Jimmy Bond—and drummer Jimmy Miller, take care of the timing with devotion and intelligence.

This set includes The Blues Message and Burnin’ — the two albums that launched Bryant and Amy’s recording careers. Tenor man Amy, a member of that masculine school of Texas-born “preachers,” is impressive as a featured co-leader. Hall, thoroughly in the cooking spirit of things, was high-spirited and stirring in his solos, comping and balancing the predominant organ adequately. In these tunes, mostly blues with a soul-searching message (Searchin’ and Still Searchin’), Bryant stomps and hollers and then drifts into the sentimental, creating, at some points, moments of pure, unadulterated truth.
